[T/N: As you can see through the use of first person, this is an editorial by a news reporter. Enjoy~]

I don’t really know Micky Yoochun as a singer very well. But I do know something about Park Yoochun as an actor. To tell you the truth, I don’t really know just how amazing Micky Yoochun was in TVXQ, an idol group that conquered(?) Japan and Asia.

To make an excuse for myself, I say that it’s okay that I don’t know much about Micky Yoochun as a singer because when TVXQ was most active, I wasn’t a reporter for the entertainment sector and I was well past the age for liking idol groups. I do know that he and two other members left SM Entertainment and formed a new group JYJ, only to have a hard time finding opportunities for TV appearances as broadcasting companies continue to be hesitant due to SM’s influence. Right now, I will be talking about Park Yoochun as an actor rather than Micky Yoochun.

Last week, Park Yoochun beat fierce competition at the ‘Baeksang Arts Awards’ to win the Best Male Newcomer Award and the Popularity Award for TV dramas. He looked quite radiant as he held his trophies and smiled brightly. To be honest, I had prejudices stacked against Park Yoochun even before I met him. The source of this came from the fact that he is from an idol group.

Yuchun Interview from ‘Motto Shiritai Kankoku TV Dorama’ (means Want to Know More Korean TV Drama) Magazine Vol.42.

Interview: Choi Hyo-Jeong
Text Kim Ji-Eun
Translated (to Japanese): Karaki Yui

—How did you feel when you first received the offer?
I received the offer sometime in early 2010. First of all I was very happy to receive the offer for the role of Lee Sun Joon. I said I definitely wanted to do it but the people in my agency and around me were very worried. Nicely put – they were worried, in not so nice words a lot of people said “Can this kid do it? You must be joking. He must have hit his head.” It was my first time acting and a historical drama on top of it. My agency told me “Sonjoon has a lot of lines and is a difficult role. Why don’t you do another role?” But I stubbornly told them “I will do Lee Son joon no matter what.” I really liked the character so I begged the CEO of the agency that I would do a good job and as a result I got the role.

—Was acting something you had wanted to do?
Yes, I always wanted to act. Acting was something I wanted to do before my debut.

—Did you start preparing for the role as soon as you were cast?
At that time the script wasn’t ready yet so I couldn’t start preparing. The script came out after the cast for the roles besides Yoon Hee was decided so I started to practice then. I think I lived with the script in one hand for 1 month while Kim Ha kyoon who played Daesasong tutored me.

Yoochun, from popular Kpop group Tohoshinki and JYJ attracted a lot of attention with his first drama acting challenge, “Sungkyunkwan Scandal.” The full set of DVDs were released for sale on 22 April, and Song Joong Ki, who played the role of playboy “Gu Yongha” in the popular “Jjalgeum Quartet” talks about the difficulties during production as well as episodes with Yoochun.

(Song Joong Ki) talked about Yoochun, who challenged acting for the first time in the same project, saying “He (asked for and) got a lot of advice.” “He’s an impressive guy (laughs), but to say that he got “acting advice” is a bit too much. Yoochun may be a rookie actor, but he has a solid position in the music industry as a singer, so I didn’t want to hurt his pride. But when he was told various things, he would be really thankful and accept it, which was unexpected. From then on, we would ask each other questions, and we could do our work comfortably and well.
